Why patchouli is in so many perfumes

Patchouli comes from the leaves of a tropical plant. It smells earthy, woody and a little sweet, and it gives a perfume depth and staying power. Modern perfumes often use cleaner, lighter versions of it.

Find your kind of patchouli

Elegant and floral: Dior Miss Dior Parfum pairs patchouli with jasmine and fruit, and Gucci Guilty Pour Femme sets it under lilac, violet and rose. Sweet patchouli: Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium mixes it with coffee and vanilla. Woody for men: Dior Sauvage Elixir and Yves Saint Laurent Y Le Parfum both use patchouli in a base of lavender and woods. Arabian and niche: Lattafa Badee Al Oud Glory pairs patchouli with oud, saffron and lavender, and Montale Aoud Greedy adds licorice and white musk.

Patchouli and rose are a classic pair; see our rose perfumes.

Patchouli perfume FAQ

What does patchouli smell like?

Earthy, woody and slightly sweet, sometimes with a hint of chocolate or camphor.

Is patchouli too strong?

In modern perfumes it is usually blended with florals, vanilla or woods, so it adds depth without taking over.

Is patchouli for men or women?

Both. It is in many perfumes for women, in classic men’s colognes and in many oud scents.
