Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette: Which Should You Choose?
The real differences between EDP and EDT: concentration, how long they last, how they smell, price, and which one suits your day. With side-by-side examples.
Eau de parfum (EDP) contains more fragrance oil than eau de toilette (EDT), so it usually lasts longer and smells richer. That is the short answer. The longer answer matters when you are choosing between two bottles with the same name, because an EDP is often not just a stronger EDT. Many brands change the formula, so the two versions can smell noticeably different.
Here is what actually separates them, and how to decide which one to buy.
The difference is concentration
A perfume is fragrance oil dissolved in alcohol (and sometimes a little water). The name on the bottle tells you roughly how much oil it contains. There is no legal standard, so brands use slightly different ranges, but these are typical:
| Name | Typical oil concentration | Typical wear |
|---|---|---|
| Eau de cologne (EDC) | About 2 to 5% | About 2 hours |
| Eau de toilette (EDT) | About 5 to 15% | About 3 to 5 hours |
| Eau de parfum (EDP) | About 15 to 20% | About 6 to 8 hours |
| Parfum, extrait or elixir | About 20 to 30% or more | 8 hours and longer |
How long each one lasts
Because it contains more oil, an EDP generally stays on your skin longer and projects further in the first hours. An EDT is lighter, more transparent and fades sooner, which is not always a bad thing. The individual notes matter too: a fresh citrus EDP can fade faster than an EDT with a rich vanilla and amber base. If longevity is your main concern, read how to make perfume last longer.
Do EDP and EDT smell the same?
Often, no. When a brand releases both versions of a fragrance, the EDP is frequently reworked rather than simply concentrated. Typical changes:
- The EDT leans fresher and brighter, with more emphasis on citrus and aromatic top notes.
- The EDP is warmer and rounder, with more vanilla, amber, woods or florals in the heart and base.
- Sometimes the two share only the name and the overall idea.
So if you love an EDT, do not assume the EDP is "the same but better". Smell both if you can.
Which one should you buy?
Choose eau de toilette if
- you want something light for the office, the gym or hot weather;
- you like fresh, clean, citrus or aquatic scents;
- you are sensitive to strong fragrance, or work close to other people;
- you enjoy reapplying during the day.
Choose eau de parfum if
- you want the scent to last from morning to evening without touching up;
- you prefer warm, sweet, woody or oriental fragrances;
- you wear perfume mostly in the evening or in cooler weather;
- you want fewer sprays to do the job.
Is EDP better value?
Usually an EDP costs more than the EDT of the same line, but you use fewer sprays and reapply less, so a bottle can last about as long in practice. Prices also depend on bottle size and special editions, so compare the price per milliliter rather than the price per bottle. Sometimes the EDT is not cheaper at all, often because it comes in a larger bottle or a newer edition.

What about parfum, extrait and elixir?
These names sit above EDP and usually contain the most fragrance oil. They tend to sit closer to the skin while lasting longer, and they often use the richest version of the formula. Dior Sauvage Elixir, for example, is a far warmer and spicier take than the original Sauvage.
How many sprays of each?
As a starting point, two to four sprays of an EDP and three to five of an EDT. Strong Arabic eau de parfums often need only one or two. Our 5 spray rule guide goes into detail.
Frequently asked questions
Is EDP stronger than EDT?
Generally yes, because it contains more fragrance oil. But "stronger" can mean longer lasting rather than louder, and the formulas often differ.
Can I wear EDT in the evening?
Of course. Concentration is about intensity and longevity, not about the time of day. A warm EDT can be lovely in the evening.
Can I layer an EDT over an EDP?
Yes, and it is a good way to make a fresh scent last longer. Apply the richer EDP first. See our layering guide.
